“The spirit of Ubuntu – that profound African sense that we are human only through the humanity of other human beings - is not a parochial phenomenon, but has added globally to our common search for a better world”.

Nelson Mandela

The critical role of local governments in an ever changing world has never been more relevant than at this moment in time. Even as we reach agreements and recognition of local issues on a global stage we are faced every day with developmental challenges that are no longer just the reality of developing nations, changes to our climate and environments that take us ever closer to the precipice of disaster and social inequalities and conflicts that test the very fabric of our humanity.

This is the rapidly changing, complex and interconnected world, within which United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) will drive diverse and dynamic stakeholders toward realising that the global world is at our local doorstep and we must respond in unison and with common purpose.

In leading UCLG we must mobilise the diversity of our experiences across varying contexts and challenges, we must build on the momentum of 15 years of advocacy, consolidate the gains we have made and expand the reach and dynamism of our movement for even greater local to global impact.
